Prohibited Items
FedEx International

These items cannot be shipped via FedEx. Rules are stricter than EMS for many categories, especially lithium batteries and dangerous goods.

Important: FedEx prohibited item rules apply on top of Japanese export laws and the destination country's import regulations. All three sets of rules must be satisfied. If in doubt, contact us before bidding.

🔋

Lithium Batteries

Lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries are heavily regulated. Batteries must be installed in devices for most routes. Loose/spare batteries face strict watt-hour limits (typically 100Wh per cell). Large battery packs (power banks, drone batteries) may be refused entirely.

💻

Electronics & Appliances

Large electronics with built-in lithium batteries (laptops, tablets) may be restricted on certain air routes. Always declare the battery specifications.

💄

Cosmetics, Perfumes & Aerosols

Alcohol-based perfumes and nail polish are classified as flammable liquids. Small personal-use quantities may be accepted with proper packaging; commercial quantities are typically refused.

💉

Pharmaceuticals & Supplements

Prescription medications require documentation. Supplements and over-the-counter drugs that are legal in Japan may be controlled or banned in destination countries. Destination country import rules always apply.

🍱

Food & Beverages

Commercially packaged and sealed foods may be shipped to some destinations but are subject to customs inspection. Perishable, fresh, or raw foods are not accepted. Alcohol shipments require import licensing in most countries.

🎨

Antiques & Cultural Property

Items over 100 years old may require an export permit from Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs. CITES-protected items made of ivory, tortoiseshell, or certain woods require CITES documentation.

🔪

Knives & Bladed Items

Kitchen knives and collectible blades can be shipped to many countries as freight, but strict packaging rules apply. Certain destination countries ban import of bladed items entirely. Switchblades and automatic knives are prohibited in most places.

🖨️

High-Value Electronics

Items with a declared value over certain thresholds (varies by country) may require formal customs entry, additional documentation, or import permits.

Notable destination-specific rules

USA

FDA import restrictions apply to food, supplements, and medical devices. Strict lithium battery labelling required.

EU / UK

CE marking may be required for electronics. Customs duty and VAT applies over €150 / £135 thresholds.

Australia

Very strict biosecurity — no food, plants, or wood products without permits. High customs scrutiny on electronics.

Russia / CIS

FedEx service availability varies. Electronics may require Russian certification (EAC mark).

Brazil

High import duties and strict customs. Electronics and branded goods are frequently inspected and delayed.

India

Electronics import may be subject to BIS licensing. High duty rates and customs hold times are common.

Considering EMS instead?

Japan Post EMS has a different (often slightly more permissive) list of prohibited items. See the EMS list for comparison.
